Perfect Starter Set
I love this set – it came with all pieces nicely packaged and nothing arrived damaged. The outside of the bowl and whisk holder have a nice texture to them, like unglazed ceramic, and the inside is glazed. The set also comes with a handbook that instructs you on how to make matcha, what it is, and what health benefits matcha offers – it’s a general overview more than in-depth, but still handy for people just starting out with making their own matcha at home. I’ve had no clumps in my matcha, and cleanup is super easy with this set! Now that I have this at home, it’s saving me a lot of money on going out and getting matcha from shops before heading into work, and I’ve found that the taste is generally better than what I get from shops around work, too. All around worth it for me!

Buy this set because of the SILICA GEL
This set came beautifully packaged with no chips or broken pieces. After searching many kits I settled on this one purely because a review photo showed the bamboo whisk packaged with a moisture absorbing packet. Many other kits I have seen bad reviews because of the bamboo whisk arriving and having mold on or inside of it. No worries here with this one because it has this packet which goes to show how the company cares for their products. Buy this one! Many colors and designs to choose from.

Didn’t know I could make a good cup of matcha
I was never a matcha tea fan. I found it too bitter and when added in “lattes” or desserts, it became this too sweet bitter flavor. Anyhoo, after a trip to Japan, I realized here in the US, a lot of coffee places and matcha whatever food makers were not doing it right, and that matcha is not really supposed to be bitter. I figure I give it another try, but make it right by getting the correct tools and using the right temperature of water. While this set may not be authentic, it works all the same. I pulled this from the box, gave it a good rinse, boiled the water to around the correct temp (I have a variable temperature kettle–very handy), and whisked my tea with the chasen. I received a couple boxes of matcha tea powder, and while I followed the directions of the how much water to use, the little booklet the tea set came with suggest that if it’s too strong, add more water to taste. Duh, right? And I added more water and guess what? It didn’t turn out bitter (just slightly). It actually ended up tasting like really strong tea, with a grassy flavor, and a hint of sweetness. I could have added more water to really mellow the flavor, which I’ll do next time. I’ve yet to use ceremonial matcha powder, which may end up being different (in a good way), but with this set, it allowed me to make regular matcha as it should be made. I ordered the pink version and it’s really beautifully made. The only thing I wish they did was make a matching tea towel, rather than the standard blue one they appear to add to all their sets regardless of color. Anyhoo, this is a wonderful starter set, and I plan to use this often (and drink match more often). Also, since it’s a fairly good sized spouted chawan, I plan to use this to make larger batches with my friends when we get together.
