A perfect burr grinder!
Let me start off by saying that I have 2 other burr grinders – the ultra-high end, high capacity hand grinder option, and a high-end electric burr grinder that lives in the kitchen at home. That other hand grinder, though fancy, tends to be very hard to grind sometimes, even when not on the espresso settings. This option has just as much variability in grind size, and for a fraction of the price. Itâs also much easier to operate. The downsides is that itâs not as packable as my other grinder, since the handle doesnât deconstruct from the lid and crank on the Tough model. In my testing, I regularly fit exactly 20 grams of coffee into the grinderâs whole bean hopper. Grinding on all the settings felt very comparable and minimal, which is very nice. The wooden handle has a great grip, and rotates smoothly in your hand. The crank shaft is long enough to give good leverage (longer than my other grinderâs crank shaft). When it was so much easier to grind with this grinder, I was worried about what the beans would look like after, but to my surprise they look really consistently ground on all the settings! The finest setting was very easy to crank through, and turned out really beautifully. I donât drink espresso regularly, but the grind is very comparable to my kitchen burr grinder on its finest setting. For the record, each pile of coffee into the pictures is 20 grams. The whole device (empty) weighs 465 grams, aka a little more than a pound. For all of that ease of grinding, you give up a slight amount of portability. The lid with the crank shaft does not lock onto the device, so if you only need one brew hiking, youâll need to pack it into a baggy, or put it in the hopper and pack the whole thing a little gently – with the crank shaft sticking out at 90 degrees. The wood knob does not come off, and the crank arm doesnât come off the lid either. For the ease of use, this seems a small price really, since youâll enjoy your coffee more if you feel you didnât just get an arm and grip workout beforehand.Looking back, if I had it all to do over again, I definitely would have bought this grinder instead of the high-end packable hand grinder I got previously. This one does really well, is a million times easier to use, and packs down almost just as well really. The wood knob/handle also really adds a touch of class that I like. This would be great in an RV – somewhere where you arenât an absolute minimalist, but by no means do you have space or regular power. At itâs current price os $45, this is an absolutely amazing deal for a really amazing grinder!

Great for Beginners at a Low Cost
Overall this manual burr grinder is good for the price point. The grind is not the most consistent, but for the price point it does a pretty good job and will still make good coffee. It is also listed as a travel grinder, which it definitely is (smaller hopper, more compact, significantly more lightweight than my others, and comes with a travel bag). The build quality feels really nice despite being lightweight. The only part of this grinder I feel could break is the black ring around the handle that covers the hopper as that feels fairly cheap. As far as cleaning goes, the base of the grinder and the burrs unscrew fairly quickly and this isn’t difficult to put back together, just need to align it and apply some pressure when screwing everything back on.One big thing to be aware of – in order to adjust grind size, the handle must be attached and held in place otherwise the adjustment screw will just spin in circles.Key Observations:- 6 full rotations of 12 clicks (72 in total)- Need to hold the arm on the grinder in place when adjusting the grind size or it will just spin- No paperwork or directions regarding grind size, so play around with it and find what works for you- Full hopper holds about 20g of coffee (could get up to about 25g)- Ideal for single serving with a 1:15 ratio and 20g + 300g water- Lightweight and fairly compact, but arm does not fold at all for travel- Grind size: Creates more fines and slightly less consistent grind size than a higher end, pricier model but overall pretty goodI attached a photo with grind size comparison from this Tough grinder (#1) to my other $170 1Zpresso (#2). The Tough grinder was set at 32 clicks (41.6% max size) and my other grind was 4-2-1 (42%). Overall they are close, but the Tough unit does create more fines and more inconsistency in size. For the cost, I’d say it does a fairly good job but if you are super picky about your grind size this may not be for you.So far I am impressed with the grinder for the cost and it will likely go into rotation for me at times, but my higher end definitely performs better. This is a great beginner and/or spare grinder though!

Works well with spices
I got this grinder primarily to grind flax seeds for my morning yogurt, as an alternative to my usual mortar and pestle. When I opened the package, I was first of all impressed with the presentation. The grinder comes in a giftable box, and you get a little storage bag as a bonus. Next, I was impressed by the heft of the metal piece and its metal parts. It is a quite attractive-looking grinder, down to the wood handle. The bottom has a dial where you can set how coarse or fine you want your coffee or spices; I set mine at 4. As I had never before used a manual grinder like this one, it took me a little trial and error to figure it out. Once I did, I found it really easy to use. It ground my flax seeds to just the consistency I like. However, and this could just be a rookie thing, but I found it challenging to figure out when I had ground all of the seeds I’d put in the receptacle. I could feel the tension at first, but I ended up with a lot of unground seeds in the receptable. I guess I will get used to the “feel” of this over time; I just wish there were a way to know you are done grinding without opening the bottom to check. Still, this will be a good alternative to my mortar and pestle when I want to grind spices like cumin and coriander and of course, my daily flax seeds. A handsome and functional product overall.
