    Porlex Mini, great for slo-cafe!
First off, great quality of grounds…. super smooth, consistent and even grind with the Espresso/Turkish fine settings. Be prepared to take your time (2-3 minutes for a full double-shot), honor your morning coffee as the relaxing ritual it’s meant to be, and enjoy. For home use, I’m cheap and can’t seem to find a reason to replace my old Bosch blade grinder I’ve had for about 30 years, and can’t really complain about the taste of my coffee….After all, my Bosch works quickly, produces smooth grind, and doesn’t heat up all that much. I suppose when the motor gives up the ghost i will switch to an electric burr grinder.Meanwhile, I bought the Porlex Mini after deciding I also wanted a small, manual coffee grinder for travel or camping or maybe to take to work, when i want to treat myself to a good cup of coffee made with freshly ground beans. Despite my loyalty to my trusty Bosch blade grinder, I did notice that beans freshly ground in the Porlex Mini and NOT heated up at all by the electric grinder do taste better. And mainly, they smell better! I like a very fine grind, between espresso and Turkish, and this grinder does the trick (had to actually back off the setting from the finest because the grinds were just a bit too fine and temporarily jammed up the filter in the Espresso maker).Directions for the Porlex Mini are in Japanese, but it’s pretty intuitive to change the burr setting to get a finer or coarser grind. The Porlex Mini is well made and for my small hands, easy to hold. I like the hand-crank, reminds me of the winch-handles i grew up with sailing. The fittings are simple and perfect. I had read a lot of reviews of this product and some others before purchasing. My other choice would have been the Skerton Mini which is cheaper, but the design of the Porlex, stainless steel vs plastic container, overall size, etc, and the slickness of the Porlex construction swayed my vote toward the Porlex. After grinding your fresh beans, just slide the bottom of the stainless steel canister down and pour the grounds into your espresso shot (for home), very little spillage. For the complete “portable” espresso bar, the Porlex Mini (without the crank) fits inside the Aerobie AeroPress, for easy packing. Of course, I couldn’t resist purchasing the AeroPress, and also went for the Kaffeologie S Filter for AeroPress (Ultra Fine Stainless Steel Reusable), so i’m all set for my next trip.

    A Pocket Mini Mazzer
This thing is the iGrinder. It is meticulously designed in a minimalist sense.I have a mini-mazzer, the rolls-royce of electric grinders, and this unit comes very close to it in terms of perfect espresso grind (or more coarse grinds for pour-over etc.).Pros:1) Only one hand-turnable nut for adjusting grind AND taking the entire unit apart for cleaning. So simple!2) Grind setting adjustable just by turning the one nut mentioned above. Click, click, done. Holds any setting until you change it. Blows away all other hand grinders in this regard. The finest setting = perfect for espresso.3) Ceramic burrs just as good as steel.4) Solid chuck-to-crank fit. No wobblies.5) Perfect size for camping, car travel, vacations, international travel – any where you might spend hours hunting down decent espresso.6) Easy to hold while grinding. It takes between 200 and 240 turns of the crank and almost exactly 2 minutes to grind ONE full hopper of espresso grade (the finest or second finest setting) at a speed that’s easy on the hands/arms and does not generate heat in the burrs. One full hopper = one double shot. This plus a Bialetti Brikka “4 cup” = a perfect pair. One hopper fills the Brikka and makes ONE DOUBLE shot. I have no idea why Bialetti calls it a “4 cup.” It should be called the “double shot” – because its for espresso! Two cautions:1) Yes, its a narrow unit. You’ll have to carefully pour in your beans Pro Tip: use the BOTTOM of the unit to dip into your coffee bag/jar and then pour beans into the top with it – this prevents all spills!2) If you have large hands, you can scrape the first joint of your index finger as you crank. I wrapped one layer of silver duct-tape around the crank to soften this leading edge.

    Solid grinder for travel, backpacking
The Porlex Mini Stainless Steel Coffee Grinder is a solid, quality piece of equipment that performs very well. I purchased it to add to my backpacking gear with an Aeropress, so that I can bring freshly roasted beans for coffee that is as exceptional on the trail as it is in my kitchen. I have since taken the kit to work and on day hikes ad am constantly asked about it. It grinds so perfectly, I even use it at home, for single cups, instead of my electric burr grinder. I kind of like the mini workout I get using it.Having removed the silicone grip sleeve that wraps around the grinder and holds the crank, the grinder weighs about 8 oz. The crank is heavy thick steel, but does not flex at all while grinding, which means it’s more efficient and less prone to failure. The crank arm is one solid piece with a pentagon shape hole punched out that fits the perfectly on the grinder and does not slip while grinding. The bulbous plastic handle on the other end is comfortable to hold and spins freely. The conical ceramic burrs can be adjusted for fineness/coarseness depending on style of brewing. The burrs are adjustable by a nut that can be turned counter clockwise to open and with each turn there is an audible click. For Aeropress brewing, I’ve set mine to 7 clicks. The burrs can be removed for cleaning and putting it back together is intuitive (it’s just not possible to put it back together incorrectly and ruin the burrs). There are other mini grinders out there. GSI makes one, but the differences are they are mostly plastic and the cranks are flimsier. You do not want a flimsy crank. This is just a beautiful, functional and well-designed grinder. Yes, it’s expensive, but I doubt I’ll be replacing very soon and I intend to get lots of use out of it.
