    Missing Auto Stop Feature
Grinder is great but does NOT have auto stop feature which senses when hopper is full. Product description says it includes this feature but the unit I received doesn’t. The barista has to manually activate the grinder when the hopper is empty. Very inconvenient.

13 Years and still going strong
I purchased my La Pavoni Zip in April of 2000. Plenty of coffee has run through the mill and I have used this machine daily for 13 years without any issues whatsoever.Looking at it I decided it’s finally time to renew the burrs (which cost less than $50 from dealers). Inspecting the interior, it is “as new” with the exception of normal, uniform wear to the grinding surfaces (still grinds fine as I write this). So what more can I say about this fine, robust appliance? The hopper exactly fits a standard 1,000 gram bag of imported espresso, it’s simple to disassemble the grinding chamber for inspection or to clear a foreign object if need presents, and it runs forever. I paid $450.00 for mine back then, today they sell on line for around $850, a good deal if you want to buy one and forget fiddling with it for more than a decade of steady grinding. Well, inspecting the interior led me to write this review, it’s seldom that one can speak so well of an old appliance.

    Bad grinder, good seller.
Seller was great and took the item back. Grinder was defective. It took about a month for them to approve it and agree to accept the return, but they did, and we got our money back. We appreciated that. The grinder is a waste.

    Git Er Done
I have had this grinder for nearly a couple decades. When looking through Amazon listings I was surprised to see it still being sold, unchanged; it looks identical to mine! Unfortunately, I have moved on and mine currently sits unused, as the old Zip has a few limitations. It is very robust and still functions just fine, but this was designed as a commercial grinder so in a home environment, its large hopper and large doser provide lots of places for stale beans or grounds to collect, but of course this is also true of any prosumer grinder. I was using it as a single dose grinder and putting only the beans I needed grinding for that single drink into the hopper. This is a disc burr grinder of 63.5 or 64mm (depending whom you consult, but the carrier is large enough to accept either one, I think). There is a lot of brass used in its construction and its very heavy, I have not weighed mine but it must be close to 30 lbs and is a large appliance, not something to stuff in a corner for occasional use. This is a serious appliance for serious coffee. Its grind range allows it to be used in anything from pour over to espresso. It can easily grind fine enough to choke any espresso machine, but one of it limitations lies in the design of its burr carrier. The carrier is threaded right hand, by the way, which is opposite from most grinder designs. But the ground size selection is done by tightening or loosening the carrier. What stops the carrier is a small plunger loaded with a spring… you press the plunger down then rotate the carrier slightly, clockwise for finer and counterclockwise for coarser. Its grind range is great and more than sufficient for any use; but this is not stepless, clearly, although in many instances the degree between any two adjacent steps is pretty decent. But if you are into a higher end espresso machine and really balancing the grind to regulate the pull time, this grinder does not offer the ability to regulate fine-ness between steps and you’ll have to settle for one or the other step. But, you can finagle that a bit by using more or less force in the tamp, to offset the grind a little… its a balancing act, but for picky people who want to tamp only just-so and expect to regulate their pull time solely by grind, this grinder is not for you. Grind quality is about the same as any of its peers like the ubiquitous Mazzers, although I find the Mazzers use springs to provide upward tension on the burr carrier, which the Pavoni does not. This is good and bad, as I feel the carrier probably does have more consistency in the Mazzer due to the upward pressure; but I have seen a few people complain of grind problems when their Mazzer’s spring tension wears down and the Pavoni does not have this problem, ever, so its a bit more dependable in the long term. You do have to take these apart to clear out old coffee in the burr section (not the entire grinder) about once a month or so. Good, dependable machine… but does not have the greatest adjustability for a somewhat high end grinder.
