ProsSturdy and Easy to Use.Grinds the peppercorns evenly.You only have to pull the lever a few times before you get a good amount of pepper.ConsMaybe a little bit pricey.Not very pretty to look at.Sterile and boring.ConclusionIâm happy with its performance I donât know how it compares to the plastic version but those look more fun to own and use. I bought this version because it looks stronger.Overall a great product especially if it holds up over the years which I really think it will.

Best pepper grinder ever!
A friend recommended this pepper grinder, and I’m totally loving it – and I don’t even like black pepper much! It has a wide range in terms of the grind and is easy to adjust – I can’t stand biting into big chunks of black pepper, so the finer setting is perfect for me for most uses. There are times when you’d want a rougher crack – like for steak au poivre – and this grinder can give you that as well, and adjusts easily. Whatever setting you use, I appreciate that it grinds very uniformly. It’s easy and oddly fun to use (the crank handle is so satisfying!), and super simple to refill – no disassembly required, you just open the little slot on the side.I’ve been in search of just a good pepper grinder that wasn’t too expensive for a long time, and I finally found on that is beyond good and reasonably priced.

High Performace…Yes!
This is my first experience with this particular type of grinder, having worn out some others. It is, in a word, impressive.I chose it almost out of frustration, over an apparent lack of interest on behalf of a popular “English” grinder brand to provide parts. Anyway, back to topic.This ratchet grinder works like a dream. Just an easy back and forth movement of the handle lays down a beautiful, uniform swath of perfect particles. I found it easy to fill, using a flatware teaspoon. It is also easier to stow than it may appear, as the handle can be left in an advantaged position. I bought the green one because it was priced lower. I like it so much, it lives on the counter!But speaking of value, the early performance of this Chinese fabrication is very high, at about half what one would expect to pay. Get yours now before the tariff jumps the price.

it is the best pepper grinder I have ever had
While it is definitely pricey, it is the best pepper grinder I have ever had: it is efficient, it does not spill pepper all over, and it is fun to use. And it’s super convenient to put pepper in – just open a small window on its side (no need in screwing and unscrewing various parts). Oh, one little detail: I washed mine before using it, and it was a bit hard to get it to dry. I thought it was dry after a day or so, put the pepper in, and it came out as a wet paste. I tried to dry the insides with a napkin, and it was not a very exciting procedure, as the grinder does not really open up, and the only access to the inside area is the small window for putting the pepper in. This being said, I love having this grinder and using it in my kitchen.

Hands wore out, pepper grinder did not
On the right is the pepper grinder I bought 40 years ago. It still works great. Sadly the hands that work the grinder are working considerably less well than they did 40 years ago. On the left is my new ergonomically friendly ratcheting pepper grinder. So much easier to use. I loved my old pepper grinder, but after an injury this summer on top of the inevitable osteoarthritis that comes with age in my family, I have found that I need new tools to carry on with normal activities. I’ve found Kuhn Rikon kitchen tools to be very aging/injured/arthritic friendly. I don’t know if this grinder will last 40+ years like my old one, but I was able to grind pepper into my soup just now without any pain. The green is very cheerful.

Does a good job
Does a good job, easy to use, seems sturdy enough, although there is a slight wiggle in the interface between the top and bottom parts. It feels good in the hand(s), and is rather easy to adjust the grind coarseness.

Rubbish.
It’s possible the unit I received was defective, but I found it to be useless. After I finally figured out how to get it open — the “easy” screw-off top is not so easy — and filled it up, I tried the ratchet. Nothing. So I adjusted the grind a couple dots towards “coarse,” and got a few bits of fine dust with about six or eight ratchets. Another adjustment, and another, and even though the sizes of the flakes got bigger, the amount produced was ridiculously small. Also concerning is the fact that the (extremely cheap plastic) dial for adjusting grind size will turn around endlessly. That tells me it isn’t doing much at all. This was a complete waste of money. I am going to see whether I can return it.Another detail potential buyers should know: the sound the ratchet makes is loud and, at least to my ears, extremely irritating. The only good things I have to say about this is it does have a visually pleasing design and it feels good in the hand. I bought it because I thought it would be useful for my arthritic, weak hands, which struggle with my old crank-operated grinder. Maybe it’s time to buy an electric one?

Efficient grinder
I’ve gone through many twist top pepper grinders of all sizes over the years, none of which ever really pleased me. Several years ago I was given a Rikon ratchet grinder in a slightly different style and it quickly became my favorite. Alas, it was pushed off a counter onto a tile floor and cracked. So this is a replacement. It works even better than the previous smaller one. I wish it were a more tasteful metal or subdued color, as it would be more suitable for the dining room table than this bright plastic utilitarian one I use in the kitchen mostly. It’s easy to fill, easy to use.
