All the essentials you need to grow your starter
Like most people during Covid, I baked a ton of loaves of sourdough bread. I don’t remember there being sets like these being available at the time, otherwise I would have ordered this years ago. Back then, I had to resort to mason jars and a lot of finger crossing. This set takes a lot of the guesswork out of the process of growing and maintaining your starter.The jar has a wide mouth which is a must since it makes it so much easier to scrape out the starter. I didn’t plan on keeping the scraper because I figured my spatula was better, but I was pleasantly surprised by it. Do I need another one-purpose kitchen tool? Probably not, but it’s nice to have. The markings on the jar are so much better than the rubber bands I used to use to mark the growth. Some of the reviews noted that the lettering rubs off easily, but that hasn’t been my experience yet.

Great value kit to start your sourdough
First – the instructions are great for a laugh. Not that they are wrong but they do need an English speaking editor.Since you will want to sterilize the jar – don’t attach the thermometer to the jar.It stays in place easily by just sticking it in the elastic marker strap.On the strap – this makes it easy to see if your starter is active and record the last time you fed the starter.Do you need this kit to make sourdough? Not really, but it does help out getting your starter going for a newbie.Also, if you have city water make sure you boil it and let it cool to get rid of any chlorine. Or just grab a gallon of distilled water to get things going.Flour used to start should also be unbleached – whole wheat is even better.

Smaller than advertised
Item described as 35 oz. The jar only holds 28 ounces, which is more in line with the 800 ml marking shown in the picture.

Poor quality
Within two washes, (by hand,) the printed numbers were gone.The jar is slim, and therefore it is uneasy to pour flour into it, and mix in it.

Good setup
Easy to learn setup for beginners to learn how to make sourdough bread. The tools are well made and overall everything you need to grow your own yeast. I really think this will help the prices along and should last a long while with proper care. Great gift for anyone looking to start bread proofing as well
