A Well Thought Out Backpacking / Camping Coffee Solution!
This system is fantastic. I was looking for something that wasn’t going to take up a lot of extra volume in my pack, for backpacking trips and such. This was the PERFECT solution. I wanted a system for making coffee that was separate from my stove system, which has ‘add-on kits’ available. I didnt want my dinners tasting like coffee though. This ended up being the perfect fit. If you’re going to drink coffee, you’ll need a mug, and this happens to have one. If you’re going to make coffee, and drink it, you’ll want your coffee maker, and your mug insulated; this checks that box as well. AND, for backpacking, you’ll want to it to be small (volume), and light weight. CHECK!!! The mug and french press parts (stem and filter disc) of this system ALL pack neatly into the larger french press ‘mug’. Its absolutely fantastic. I can confirm the insulation does work quite well too. This doesn’t need to be ‘just for backpacking’ either. This is a great setup in general. Makes great coffee. Pretty easy to clean, even when backpacking with limited water supply. It was literally EXACTLY what i was hoping i’d find on the market. My ONLY TWO improvement recommendations would be to have the included mug be the GSI Outdoor “Infinity Backpacker Mug” which has measuring marking, a cool handle, and a closable lid. If that mug came in this set, it’d literally be PERFECT. Not a must, as most have other means of measuring, and I didn’t miss the handle or the closable lid much out on my trip(s), because the coffee in the mug didn’t last long enough to warrant that anyway. It was so yummy, i drank it all up! In summary, this is a GREAT system, especially for backpackers looking to save weight and volume, but get a simple, but great tasting cup of coffee out on the trail. I’d HIGHLY recommend this product to anyone. Well done GSI!

Solid buy and works well.
Easy to use, makes great coffee, lightweight enough for me, and it nests well. I wish they would add graduation markings to the cup but if you have a separate gsi coffee mug (infinity mug I think they call it) with graduations you can swap it out (only the cup, the sleeve with fabric handle will not fit so replace it with the sleeve that comes with the kit). Solid buy. Would buy again. It makes a solid 2 cups at a time. Bought it to save on fuel while backpacking (since you have to keep a percolator boiling for a while. Works great. Problem solved. Problem staying solved.

5 stars with a very minor quibble
I’m always looking for a way to downsize my camping gear and thought a press would be a great way to get rid of my percolator. Percolators take an eternity to brew when you NEED THAT JAVA NOW and tend to burn coffee anyway so, after a little searching for one that I thought might suit me, I bought this one.It arrived today and I immediately opened it, washed it and started some water on the stove to check it out. Even using regular ground Folger’s French Roast, I was impressed with the results. It only took a few minutes to make a couple cups of coffee and I didn’t get any grounds in my mug. Then is definitely a welcome addition to my camping gear. The only quibble I have is the tab used for taking the lid off the press. It’s very small and, if you don’t have fingernails, I can see that it would be somewhat hard to remove. For winter camping with gloves on, it’s got to be next to impossible. But, other than that, with the ability to keep the press, the mug and a bag of coffee all in one small package, this is an absolute winner. The only problem now is getting enough time to actually go camping…Update to my March 20, 2013 review:Still 5 stars. I somehow managed to lose my old one on a camping trip so I didn’t hesitate to buy another one. I like this one even better. The sleeves are now ballistic nylon compared to the foam (neoprene?) sleeves on the old one. They might not insulate quite as well, but the foam sleeves were starting to wear and seemed like they were about to give out after a “mere” four years of almost constant use. I don’t foresee that happening with the nylon.

works great
Lightweight, functions as it should, pours good, no coffee grains poured into cup. Important; read directions. Those instant coffee packets, like SB Via etc, are ok for me in an emergency. But this GSI coffee press is the bomb! Sooo much better flavor, taste than the instants. Now always in my backcountry pack.Care with operation is needed for this GSI press system. Being plastic, won’t take mishandling, abuse or using force, like a steel press at home. Directions for use mentions precautions to take. You can vary amount of coffee to your preference. directions recommend 2 TBSP per 6-oz water. I like my coffee a bit weak, so 18-oz boiled water gets 4 or 5 TBSP instead of 6. Make sure to use coarse grind and not fine grind. I use MSR Reactor to heat & boil water separately. Add coffee to press container, add boiling water, stir then put on lid and turn slightly so opening is closed to spout. Then wait 4 minutes, slowly press down plunger, turn press lid to spout opening, pour into cup, add creamer/milk if desired, attach cup lid and enjoy.Only downside is as you wait for brewing, water is cooling off slightly. But who can drink boiling hot coffee anyways?!I find the end result is very hot coffee. Warm up hands a bit holding cup, then drink when temp is just right. When finished, I find in removing Lid/Plunger for cleaning, pull plunger up to top. Lid easier to remove now. Otherwise removing lid is difficult as plunger has to move thru pot side walls if it is in the down/bottom position. Cleans easily with water, swish around. Pour out used coffee grains near bushes, good for them. If using water from natural source for clean up (like from creek, lake) you might be exposing press system to contaminants. Using hot, boiling water for next brew could kill any possible bacterial contaminant in the press from natural water source. I usually reserve few ounces of my boiled water separately to clean up press pot & cup afterwards when finished. Store away dry as you can.

I bought this coffee press to use on camping trips. It is so good I am using it at home too. The insulated press keeps coffee hot as it brews and the filter is fine enough to reduce the amount of sludge at the bottom of the cup.
