I’ve been getting into matcha lately, and this kit has everything I needed to make it at home. The whisk is great—it froths up the tea really well—and the bowl is a good size and feels solid. The little sieve is handy for getting rid of clumps, which makes a big difference in the texture.I was surprised by how easy it is to clean, too. Most of the pieces just rinse off or can go in the dishwasher. It’s also really pretty and doesn’t take up much space in my kitchen. If you’re new to matcha, this is a great starter kit.

This tea set has everything you need to prepare a nice cup of matcha. The included mat is a nice touch. Although a small detail, I preferred this set to others because of the all-steel strainer.Before using, I soaked the chasen (whisk) in hot water in the mug I was making my latte in. Not only does it soften the bamboo bristles, but it also warms up the mug in preparation for the drink.To make a matcha latte:I used the enclosed bamboo spoon to scoop two spoonfuls of matcha powder. I sifted that into the tea bowl and mixed in three tablespoons of water. In my milk steamer, I added two teaspoons of honey to one cup of milk and steamed until hot and frothy. Lastly, I poured the tea into my mug, poured the frothed milk on top, and sprinkled a dash of matcha powder on top.

Paradoxically, as it turns out, matcha’s origins can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty in China, but it was in Japan, during the 12th century I’m told, that the art truly blossomed. History tells me that they developed the meticulous art of the tea ceremony (aka chanoyu) partly by elevating matcha preparation and consumption to a profound spiritual practice.Having said that background, I feel this kit allows me to recreate a simplified version of that ritual at home. The process of whisking the green powder, the subtle earthy aroma that fills the air, and the first sip of the creamy, slightly bitter brew – it’s a moment of quiet contemplation in my busy day. I find myself slowing down, focusing on the present, and appreciating the simple act of preparing and enjoying tea.While I’m no aspiring tea master, this kit does make the process more accessible and enjoyable for anyone. The pouring beak on the bowl is a good design choice, by preventing spills and ensuring a smooth pour.
