A Grand Grind
Wow!In my house, we take our coffee seriously. We buy beans and grind them daily. Our main grinder is a Baratza, but this is a solid backup in case of power failure, for travel, or if we only want to use a small amount of coffee. It comes with a fantastic, compact carrying case. The design of this grinder is really well thought out. The base, while flush with the outside of the unit, is beveled on the inside to allow grounds to fall out without getting stuck on the rim. The handle turns easily and folds down nicely. The burr is sharp and did a perfect fine grind. It is easily adjustable if we ever want a courser grind. The only drawback is the limit on space, and therefore, output. To make enough for a full pot of coffee, you’ll have to fill it up and empty it a few times. It’s easy to crank the handle, but it’s still time consuming.

Poorly Designed
I will start by saying I have only used this two times. I’ll update this review if I have better results in the future. This has what I consider a major flaw — the top lid “screws off” in a clockwise direction. This means that when I turn the crank, the top lid (which you remove to insert the beans) kept loosening up. It felt like it would fall off several times while I was cranking. I had to stop cranking and re-tighten the top lid. It does not actually screw on, but is held on with tabs. So, you cannot even overtighten the lid to prevent this problem.Due to the way the lid is attached, I’d recommend purchasing another product. This is really frustrating, as the product designer has the lid loosen opposite the normal manner — you’d expect it to get tighter as you crank clockwise. It seems like the designer went out of the way to develop a poorly made product. This is my first hand grinder and also my first grinder with a burr mill instead of a spinning blade. It did produce much more uniformly ground beans than my cheap electric grinders with blades. It seemed like it took a lot of cranking to grind up 20 grams (about the maximum amount) of beans. It also ground them very finely — much more finely than pre-ground coffee from the grocery store. I kept setting it coarser, but did not see any difference in the size of the grounds. Perhaps with more experience, I can figure out how this grinder controls the ground size.

Maybe not the best for espresso
I have solely tested this grinder for espresso and have found that it might not provide the best fidelity. I am using a grinder that is 60% cheaper and grinds my coffee on setting 18 giving me a lot of room either way depending on the bean. Setting up this grinder was very confusing (more later) but after 7 tries i got it to grinde at a similar level with a 30s /32g extraction of 16g beans (dark roast). It is on setting 2, meaning 2 clicks left after going all the way right. So not much room to go finer if needed.Another issue for me personally was the grinding process. After grinding 16g for the 5th time I started to feel like this grinder takes a lot longer than my other grinder. So I started counting. It took me over 450 rotations. My personal grinder takes about 160 rotations to grind up 16g of dark roast beans. I’m not a big coffee snob to know if there’s a difference here but I’d rather grind my coffee in 1/4 the time.I do like the aluminum, which is nice. But compared to other grinders at this price range I kinda would have liked a magnetic grounds jar than a twist on. And maybe use a perforated aluminum outer shell rather than this soft rubber that i could feel where it was cut and glued together. It is also wider in diameter yet does not seem to fit more coffee beans than my more narrow grinder. This makes holding it while grinding 450 rotations a bit more tiring on the hand/fingers.It does feel like the grinding process is lighter and less jarring, and it’s nice that it comes in a travel case and the handle can be disassembled. But it is heavier and bigger than others.Lastly, the instructions. It states to turn the dial all the way to the right and then back to 0 so it’s calibrated. But calibrated to what? How? It did not make any sense. When I turned it all the way to the right, the indicator was at 15. I turned it to 0 then used 8 as my first setting and coffee poured out of my espresso machine. If anyone testing this can explain how that is supposed to work, I’d appreciate it. The instructions are in the pictures.I think this might be a good companion when I go camping for being a bit more robust and grinding up some pour over…but with the small amount of coffee that fits in there (probably 20g of light roast and 18g of dark roast) plus all the spinning this will take quite a while to get to the brewing part. I hope to see this grinder in some of the more fancy testing videos in the future and see how it compared to other grinders in this price range, but for now I think my k3 is the better option.Picture shows 16 dark roast in hopper and then ground up.

Not much luck with espresso
Initial impressions is that the build quality is decent. Lighter than expected, but feels solid and mostly aluminum body. The grind result has been a let down so far. It took twice as long as my other grinder. Even at the finest setting, the extraction feels low with the espresso tasting more watery and lower pressure. May update if I find improvement. Overall does not seem well suited for espresso grinds especially for the price. Still giving 4 stars for the quality build and may still be great for coffee grinds. Comes with a nice fitted case and cleaning brush.
