I got this kit because I want to learn more about candle making and thought this would be a good way to dip a toe into this field. This kit comes with everything you need to make a few candles. You got a melting pot with lid, a bag of soy wax pellets, a wooden paddle, a thermometer, 4 scents (rose, lavandar, vanilla, and jasmine), 4 colors (red, sapphire, lavender and Christmas green), wicks, wick stickies, stirring spoon, 4 wooden wick holders, 6 black candle holders with lids, stickers to put on the candle holders, and instructions…everything you need. After reading the instructions I felt like I was missing half of the info. I was given 6 candle holders, but not told how much candle wax to use to fill 1 up. I also wasn’t really given an idea of how much of the scent to use (I think somewhere it did say 1/2 bottle per cup of wax, I think, but it is hard to tell how much you use when the label takes up the whole bottle and there isn’t much in there too begin with). And What do you if you want to have each candle with a different scent? And how do you clean the pot?But if you ignore my questions and just do it, it works well. The pot has 3 options, off, 1, and 2. I used 1 for all of the times I have used it, and the wax melts fairly quickly. I do use the wooden paddle to stir it so I don’t get too many clumps. The coloring waxes are bright and the wax that comes with the kit takes the color nicely. However, I was disappointed that the green went from a nice green to a mint when it cooled. The scents are a bit strong as well. I personally don’t care for Rose, lavender or Vanilla…these are very strong and reminded me more of a great-grandmother’s house than mine, so I opted to use the Jasmine.Overall…this is fun for those who just want to do it and have fun. I think I was looking for more answers than this was going to give and I ended up a bit more frustrated than I wanted. The melting pot is the star is in this kit for me. It is a good way to melt the wax, and with the pour spout, it was easy to pour it into the candle holders. And having all of the items in 1 kit was also nice – I just wish a few things were better. Scents – they are the traditional aromas, but they are old and it is time for companies to update the offerings to more current trends. And the instructions manual would be better if it gave you more details of what to do (like how much wax to use per candle) and how to clean the pot once you have colored and scented a batch of wax, so it doesn’t leak into your next batch. But again, for those who are just wanting to have fun, this is the perfect kit.

This kit was the perfect starter into my family’s world of candle-making and now we no longer buy candles, we simple make them ourselves. The combinations are endless, and this melter has been perfect for soy and beeswax (I still haven’t tried paraffin). Kit includes more than enough to get you started, so grab your favorite empty candle jars (don’t we all have one) and this kit to start making your own custom scented candles.

I’ve been sort of playing at candle making, mostly because I couldn’t stand throwing away all those stubs and lasts bit of wax from storebought candles. I had a couple of pillar candle molds and random wicks, but that’s about it — I was using a double boiler that works great for melting chocolate but hard to pour with any accuracy. I decided to get this kit and see what happened when I had proper tools. Oh boy, what a difference! This review has a lot of information in it, because I hope that will be helpful to beginners who are trying to figure out what to expect from this kit.First, it has everything needed to make very nice basic candles without improvising — no “making do” with items not designed for candle making, or going without color/scent. The wax melter is a good size for me because I’m making candles for my own use; it would probably be too small for someone in business. It’s lightweight but feels sturdy and well made. I’ve made three batches of soy candles so far (I splurged on two other kinds of soy wax) and it’s in fine condition. I like my candles large and long-burning, and all three batches were the maximum the wax heater would hold. For two batches, I filled it with wax pellets and melted them. For one batch, I filled it with wax pellets, let it heat and partially melt down to make some space, then added more pellets until the pot held a total of 2 pounds of soy wax. Both ways worked fine, but the bigger batch was hard to control the pour at first — kind of like trying to pour that first dollop of milk from a gallon jug. That’s user error, I always spill a bit of the first milk from a gallon unless I use a big cereal bowl. I plan to fill the pot once and not “top it off” in the future. There are two heat settings, basically Off, Low, and High. I’m cautious and have only used Low so far. A full pot of soy wax melted in about 15 minutes without stirring except just before the last bits melted, which is a bit longer than the 10 minutes claimed. I found it to be a really good idea to set up the candle molds/jars and wicks before starting to melt the wax. When I get more experienced I might be able to do that while it’s melting, but not yet. Once the wax has melted, the temperature rises very fast — going from 133 F to 200 F in a few minutes. It’s my understanding that the 200 F temperature is only needed when I’m adding scent or color, and the best pour temperature is more like 150 F, so I let it sit covered for 20 or 20 minutes while the wax cooled. I made one unscented and uncolored candle and only heated it to 150 F and poured, and it set nicely. (Then I heated up the rest of the batch to 190 and added scent/color to the rest.) The melter lid has a permanent vent hole in the top, so no danger of accidentally vacuum sealing the lid to the pot while letting the wax cool. The kit includes a rapid-read thermometer, which made the process a LOT easier for me. I measured the temp with a candy thermometer too, to test accuracy, and it’s within a few degrees. My candy thermometer is years old and might be the one that’s off. The directions suggest turning off the heat and stirring each time you measure the temperature, and I found that a very useful tip. When I tried to measure the temperature while it continued to heat, the temperature was visibly rising by the second. There’s a wooden stirrer/spatula that I found much more useful than I expected. The wood didn’t stain or pick up scents from the wax, and the edge is beveled so it’s a great scraper for a messy person like me. I also found it a decent estimate of the color of the wax (submerge it and check the deepest bit of the spatula), but that might be just me. The colors are vivid if you add the whole packet to a full pot of wax, and it’s easy to use less for pastels. The scents were pleasant; I have a lousy sense of smell so can’t comment on how strong the scent is when you burn the candle.I liked the directions, but then I’ve made some clumsy candles already so I know some of it — such as, the wick has to be stuck onto the bottom of the jar or mold with some kind of sticker or goo. The melter heats only on the bottom surface of the pot, and the walls get warmed by the wax as the wax heats up. The underside of the melter does get hot too — on High, it would burn skin. On low, I didn’t need to use a trivet or any other heat-resistant surface; I did use a wooden cutting board under it and no signs of scorching, browning, or drying out. The rest of the melter was cool to my touch, specifically the lid handle and pot handle.Bottom line, I think this is an excellent kit for beginners and a very good small-batch kit for those with more experience. It’s a very worthwhile investment.

Great candle kit for the price! You get a lot of stuff and everything you need to make some decent candles. The essential oils are a lower quality and don’t smell as great as higher quality oils I use. But for just starting, this will get you going in no time. The hot pot is a nice feature. Easy to pour though a little wax always accumulates between the hot plate and the plastic spout. Stays plenty cool to the touch so definitely a safer option than a burner/double boiler. But it runs hot. Depending on the wax, and especially if using essential oils to scent, this makes the wax too hot to use safely or effectively. I wish there was either an actual temperature control setting (instead of just “1” or “2”) or just more settings that start lower to make it a little more useful.
