Bail-top jars (also called French Kilner, wire bail, or Lightning jars) are rarely used in North America for canning these days, although jars like them are still used to preserve and store foods in many European countries. They retain an old-world style and appeal that is lacking in the twist-top Mason jars we are more familiar with.Unlike Mason jars, which have a bare or plastic-coated metal lid, when wire bail jars are used for canning, food only contacts glass or a natural rubber (occasionally silicone) gasket, so they are preferred by those who wish to avoid leaching of metal or plasticizing chemicals, particularly when canning acid foods like tomatoes or sauerkraut.Also, unlike Mason jars, wire bail jars provide easy, no-twist, airtight storage for drygoods, or for fridge storage. The no-twist, pop up action appeals to people with arthritis or Parkinson disease who may find it painful or difficult to open Mason jars.Many wire bail jars are made in China. I came across some at a large Swedish-named furniture store. Like most people, I have concerns about Chinese products, because of well-known quality control issues. My concerns are even greater when it comes to possibly adulterated food or food containers.These wire bail jars are made in Italy, and are very good quality. They come with (replaceable) gaskets. Because my homemade prepared mustard was such a hit this year, I bought two boxes (24) of these jars to keep up with demands of my friends and neighbors. I also bought 2 dozen wire bail bottles by the same manufacturer. Great Jar, does what it’s meant to do.
lol I’m a cheapskate so I really scoffed at buying one of these brand new. I worked part time at goodwill for extra money and to pass the time for a couple years and I would come across this type of jar fairly frequently. Price at 50 cents to $3 depending on the size, I of course went right to GW when I needed to buy one. OF COURSE, when I needed one, they didn’t have them. Went several times and still nothing so I started looking online. It’s unreal how much some people are charging for these. This is a great jar that seals tight with zero leakage. If I could buy them somewhere else used and at half the price I would but if new is the only option then these Bormioli Rocco Fido jars are the way to go.

No leakageSvelte nostalgic a tad baroque to balance out the cuteness of the shape and minimalism of color and bling. At the same time it turned out my other ordered the Rocco gasket bottles for canning and id ordered these and two more orders for my friends as an easy way to sharey products with them and give them plastic free glassware!What I like is that it abeys uncertainty about the seal. This is the only brand I’ve seen who uses rubber gaskets (I think) white Thick rubber and no chrome paint I can discern on the latch. No spilling,

Homemade seasoning mixes
This jar is the perfect size for the homemade taco seasoning recipe I use (from Annie’s Eats). It had enough room that I could dump in all the spices and close it and shake it up – no need to mix in a bowl – and a good seal that didn’t leak when I did that. Now that I know that, I am excited to order a couple more for some of the other blends I mix up. Great jar. (However when I bought my jar the price was under $8…now they are over $15 so I will be waiting to see if that price drops!)
