ABOUT BAMBOO MATCHA WHISK (CHASEN)
The Chasen (or bamboo matcha whisk) is an integral part of Chanoyu, the Japanese tea ceremony. It is used to make the powdered green tea called Matcha in a bowl. This tool has been used for centuries in tea ceremony. The whisks are made by hand, including the detailed work of curling the thin strands of bamboo.
The whisk is the single most important thing after the matcha itself when it comes to preparing a good beverage. It is called “chasen” (茶筅) in Japanese, it is made of bamboo and designed especially to prepare matcha.
The whisk allows to mix matcha powder, water, and air into a nice frothy beverage, releasing aromas and essences in the foam on the surface. It is not only about dissolving the powder in water! Oxygenation is key.
For coffee drinkers: think of this effect as the froth on your espresso or cappuccino.
For wine drinkers: think of it as aeration – wine needs to “breathe” to reveal its full potential.

How to Make Matcha Green Tea
sift matcha powder into a matcha bowl
First, sift matcha powder into a matcha bowl . Matcha clumps very easily, so I always recommend sifting it before you add any water. Otherwise, it will be difficult to get the tea to disperse evenly in the liquid, and your drink will be lumpy.
How to whisk matcha
Whisking is the key part of making a good and foamy matcha!
The whisk allows to mix matcha powder, water, and air into a nice frothy beverage, releasing aromas and essences in the foam on the surface. It is not only about dissolving the powder in water! Oxygenation is key.
This simple and modest tool is very important for several reasons.
You must simply whisk the matcha back and forth, NOT in a circular motion but in a W or zigzag pattern. Or just back and forth. You need to shock the material as you incorporate air to the water and tea, otherwise it will not be foamy.(Whisking in circles is too smooth and you will not be able to oxygenate your tea = no bubbles)
Keep whisking for at least 20 seconds. Your hand will feel tired and sore but DO NOT STOP.
How do you make matcha more tasty?
Finally, top it off with more hot water or steamed milk. Traditional matcha green tea is made with just green tea powder and water, but you can also easily make a latte by finishing your drink with steamed milk.
Although correctly prepared matcha is not bitter, it can take some getting used to. Sweetening matcha is another easy way to help make it more palatable. Non-flavored sweeteners like sugar and agave syrup will preserve matcha’s natural flavor while sweeteners like honey and chocolate will mask it well.
How to take care of your bamboo matcha whisk (5 simples steps)
How to take care of your bamboo matcha whisk (5 simples steps)
Tip 1 – Soak the Matcha whisk in hot water before putting it to work.
The tines of a bamboo matcha whisk a very brittle and susceptible to breaking off. This can happen prematurely if you don’t season the whisk before use. Placing the whisk in a bowl of hot water for at least 30 seconds before each use will allow the tines to absorb the water which will in turn soften the tines and prevent breakage. Your Whisk is now seasoned and ready to dance the Zig Zag. Special mention: If your whisk is brand new, the tines will be very stiff at first. It will take at least 3-5 brews before the whisk starts to bloom and the tips to soften up. Once the whisk has softened up, making the Matcha froth will be much easier.
Tip 2 – Work on your whisking technique
The easiest way to ruin your precious whisk is improper use.
The number 1 rule is to try not let the tines of the whisk scrub against the bottom of the bowl. This might be difficult to prevent if you are whisking matcha in a coffee mug. An original chawan matcha bowl is designed with practicality in mind, which is why they feature a wide open mouth and good size bowl base.A matcha bowl is far more shallow than a mug and will give you the space you need to perfect the whisking technique.
Tip 3 – Rinse the whisk with water immediately after use
Your bamboo Matcha whisk can easily attract decay if not cleaned and dried after each use. Don’t wait to wash. Wash immediately after use. Don’t put your whisk in the dishwasher for cleaning.Don’t use detergent to clean your whisk either. Instead, simply run warm water over the whisk with the tines facing down. I say this, because as much as possible, you don’t want water pooling up in the narrow neck of the whisk. How to wash a bamboo matcha whisk chasen.I use a bamboo brush and gently wipe the tines down removing any excess matcha under the tap.
Tip 4 – Air dry your bamboo whisk
Decay is a whisks worst enemy!Bamboo is porous so if your matcha whisk is stored away before it has completely dried then I’m afraid your whisk will start to turn a bit smelly. The fastest way to dry your matcha whisk is to keep the tips down and place your whisk on a window sill to catch some sunlight or somewhere open air and dry.Don’t place it in the cupboard draw or pantry until it is completely dry.Use a drying rack or better still, invest in a ceramic purpose built whisk holder. How to dry and story matcha bamboo whisk with ceramic whisk holder. The whisk holder will help maintain the natural shape of the whisk and at the same time do a great job in speeding up the drying process.
Tip 5 – Store your whisk in a cool dry place
Do not store your whisk in the plastic cylinder packaging that it came in. That is a breeding ground for decay. Instead, once it has completely dried out, then your best bet is to store it in a cool dry place.
When is it time to get a new whisk? After the very first use, the shape of the matcha whisk will change. The whisk will start to bloom and the tines in the centre will generally loosen and open up. This is perfectly normal. In fact, the more the whisk opens up, the easier it gets to produce frothy matcha.
Old matcha whisk vs new matcha whisk chasen.Over time, the tines will eventually break off. Even with a few tines broken you will find that the whisk will still perform well. If you do see signs of decay, or it starts to smell funny – then try boiling it in water for some minutes and brush it down. You can even use a hair dryer to rapidly dry the whisk and prevent moisture building up.
If you follow these tips you can get at least 12 – 18 months out of your whisk.

Lovely set, but not well packaged for shipping
I ordered this twice, as a Christmas gift for a tea enthusiast. Both times, the tea canister arrived broken. The second time, I gave up hope that it would arrived undamaged, and gave the set without the canister. As mentioned in the headline, it’s a lovely set, and the presentation looks beautiful, but would transit better if packaged differently (and marking it ‘fragile’ couldn’t hurt.)

Broken matcha cans
The match kit looks awesome, itâs the broken matcha can that I think should be improved. I was ordering this as a gift for my friend, and the matcha can arrived broken. I ordered again, and the matcha can is broken again. But besides that, other items look great to me, just wish that the packaging could have been better.

Easy to use for a beginner
I found this set is easy to understand and use. I do wish it came with the technique tips that are here on the product page. This is a very giftable set, coming in a beautiful box that any tea lover would enjoy. The basic instructions on the inside of the box lid is helpful but I’ve unknowingly been doing the wrong technique because included directions doesn’t tell you to not do it in a circle motion. Overall, this is a beautiful set that is sure to impress.

A good set of Matcha tea set for Matcha lovers. They are not hard to use. Even there are many pieces, still very easy to figure out for beginners like me.I can make Matcha Latte out of it, which saved me a lot money since I donât need to buy from coffee shops.Everything inside are very cute and look high-end.Like art pieces on the table.Using the full set for Matcha gave me the feeling of Zen.The materials: bowl, whisk, scoop, etc. are good quality, not easy to break from my use.

Great gift for loved ones (or yourself!)
This fairly priced matcha set is great because it has everything that you need to get started making matcha, from the bowl to the whisk. Some of the wooden utensils eventually may need replaced (like the whisk), but the price is so fair on these items that they are easily replaced. They last a very long time nonetheless. If you love matcha, this kit will help you make it the way you should make it to extract the best flavor from the tea. It’s the way matcha should be made, in my opinion.
