Why choose a Motta Tamper?
Ergonomic Handle
The wooden handle of Motta’s tamper is ergonomically designed to fit in the palm of the average hand. With this design you can also use your index finger and thumb to push down rather than using the handle alone.
Stainless Steel Base
The base of this tamper is made of 18/10 stainless steel. This heavy weight base is the perfect weight for pressing down on your espresso.
Design
Motta’s wide range of products are design driven to add beauty to any home or kitchen!!
Choosing The Right Size Tamper
WHEN CHOOSING THE RIGHT SIZE TAMPER THE RULE OF THUMB IS TO MEASURE THE INNER DISTANCE OF YOUR PORTA FILTER, THEN SUBTRACT 1 MM IN DIAMETER.
How To Use Your Tamper
Measure the Perfect amount of ground coffee and place in your porta filter, ¼ ounce for a single, and ½ ounce for a double. Tap the sides of your porta filter to evenly distribute the coffee or use a coffee leveling tool to provide a flat bed to tamp on.Place your porta filter on a flat surface with tamping mat or tamping standPlace your tamper evenly in your porta filter. This step is extremely important, an uneven tamp means an uneven extraction.Press down evenly with your tamper at approximately 30 pounds of pressure. To feel what 30 pounds feels like, take your tamper and press down on bathroom scale or kitchen scale until you reach 30 pounds. The amount of pressure is not as important as pressing evenly with the tamper. If desired you may polish the tamp by lightly spinning the tamper – a matter of style, not a necessity!Wipe away any grinds that have fallen on the portafilter and basket rim.Your are now ready to place your tamper into your machine and brew the perfect shot of espresso!!
Precautions
To make sure you get the best results, you should always make sure your tamper is clean. To do that, give it a swift brush after each use or wash it under warm water. NEVER PLACE YOUR TAMPER IN THE DISHWASHER!!

a quality tool
This is a great tool! The handle is a beautiful wood (much prettier than the product picture here would have you believe) and the metal base fits well in standard portafilters. The weight, grip, and balance are great – It’s machined well with extremely slight concentric ridges on the bottom (you can see them but I don’t think they affect the coffee at all). Also, mine had a few superficial scuffs on the base but I’m not going to dock points because it doesn’t affect this quality tool at all.

Wonderful tamp! The wood is beautiful
Wonderful tamp! The wood is beautiful. The surface of the tamp is spot on. The weight feels right (it just feels like it should as you work with it). It makes it easy to produce excellent shots. I find that a light to medium tamp produces extremely nice results using this tamp. Well worth the price paid!

Great tamper, especially for the price!
Very well made! The stainless steel base (58 mm) fits perfectly with just the right amount of space between the tamper and the basket. The base is thick and heavy enough to not only give it a great feel, but makes it easy to get a good, level tamp. I really thought about a Reg Barber tamper, but I’m glad I didn’t spend more than twice the amount I spent on the Motta!

almost perfect…
This is a beautiful and high quality tamper. However, in a 58mm basket, it does leave about .5mm of space inside the basket, meaning you need to center it to make sure you get the best tamping possible. Even then, it’s impossible for this tamper to 100% compress the entire puck evenly because there’s a bit of space. I honestly don’t know for sure how much it will effect your extraction, but on my machine, which is a lever, I could tell the difference between this tamper, and a 58.5mm tamper. Lever machines force more water down the sides of the basket initially, and this is where this Motta tamper is most likely to apply less force to the puck – potentially creating more opportunity for channeling. In practice, I have still prepared and extracted some good espresso using this tamper. But I have been a bit inconsistent, and I attribute it to the tamper. Considering that I have improved consistency just by swapping tampers, I like to draw this conclusion, but the evidence is potentially all anecdotal. If you have your heart set on a Motta and want this tamper, you’ll probably be happy with it. If you’re a bit of a perfectionist, you may want to look into a 58.3 – 58.5mm tamper. Keep in mind, that my 58.5 is fits so tightly that it sometimes sucks the puck out of the basket a bit, also causing a big problem. I think a 58.4 would have been a perfect compromise for me.

Light, slick design & great looking tamper
It’s a great tamper that was designed to fit the average palm and I think it looks good too. It is not a heavy piece so I think one can gauge more accurately the pressure one puts onto the coffee by the hand pressure. Because of its design, since the wooden handle “rests” inside the palm, it makes it easier to use the index finger and thumb to create the pressure rather than press hardly on the handle which is the wrong way to press the coffee. I have another heavy one and it’s more difficult to asses because it’s easier just to crush the coffee grinds by using it. However, if you are used to rap the tamper on the side of the porta filter to dislodge some coffee stuck to the inside, this would not be the one to do it with. First I’d feel bad to ding it or cause marks on it, but it is more because it is light, so you may want to use the wooden handle to do it.

High quality tamper
Incredibly well crafted, base has a nice heft to it and the handle is fairly light — and this is a good thing as this makes the handle simply guide the base instead of controlling it, meaning it is easier to get an even tamp even if you are a little bit off axis.Fits my Profitec 500 portafilter almost perfectly. Think that my basket (standard double) requires 58.5mm so there is a little bit of grinds left on the inside walls, but I just run my finger along the edge to get them off and it works fine.Overall great tamper, feels high quality and that is the best part. It is a joy to use

Exceptional!
New to the espresso machine game. Bought this based on reviews. We’re opening a cafe and we needed something to get started. We had inherited two other tampers with some equipment.. and honestly, I can’t even use them. They’re more steal and boxy in shape… this one is beyond comfortable and just feels great. I’m a newbie, so my opinion might be lame… but for what it’s worth, this is a fantastic item and quite glad this is what we use. Very well constructed and feels great with repeated uses.

Beautiful woodgrain, fits my Francis Francis X1 perfectly.
Upgrade for the home coffee station. Super value with a price comparable to a basic tamper if you’re lucky enough to get it through warehouse deals.

This tamper has great weight and feel. It feels comfortable in hand and fits snugly into the portafilter. Great value tamper if youâre not looking for something reliable and sturdy.Leaves a smooth finish after tamping and itâs easy to clean. Iâve been using regularly for the last year and it still looks like new
