Our founder, Melitta Bentz, invented coffee filters and pour-over brewing in 1908. For over 100 years, Melitta has remained a pioneer in coffee, coffee filters and coffee brewers. Our paper filters are 100% biodegradable. We offer filters for cone, flat bottom basket, percolators and Keurig single serve coffee brewers. Our filters are produced using chlorine-free white, natural brown and bamboo paper. Simple, cost effective, durable.
I bought this to replace my 30 plus year old Melitta coffee maker that finally got dropped one too many times. These are the best, and simplest, way to make coffee. There’s no heating element to burn out, no electronics to malfunction, just a very durable plastic cone and a glass pot.

This unit will make the best coffee ever. Period.
UPDATE: Here’s an interesting tip. The 26 ounce cans of pre-ground “house brand” coffee such as Great Value or Shure Fine have plastic snap-top lids that fit that fit the top of this plastic cone perfectly! Use one to keep the heat in while dripping, or set up the night before and cover the cone securely. Even the colors almost match!PLEASE NOTE: Many of the reviews here, especially 1 star are NOT FOR THIS UNIT! They are for some ceramic pot and appear here in error! This review is for the glass pot and is a unit I purchased, not “free for review.”Bottom line for the impatient or over-caffeinated: This unit will make the best coffee ever. Period.Rest of the story: Years ago, Melitta ran ads showing their automatic drip maker and this pot with the phrase, “Automatic or Manual.” This was a take-off on the automatic and manual transmission of cars and their comparative benefits.Automatics are convenient, keep the coffee hot and some have clock-timers. But, as “hipsters” can attest, pour-over makers offer more control of the brewing process. For example, the ability to pour some water over the grounds, let it “bloom” and extract and then pour in the remaining water prevents ground from floating to the top of the cone, essentially unused. And, in my experience, if you put the kettle on and then grind, measure and fill the cone while the water heats (not before!), the whole brewing process is shorter than an automatic drip cycle! I used a stainless steel insulated carafe to hold coffee after brewing as opposed to compatible hot plates. If you’ve read this far, here is another very important part: This is an (up to) 10 cup maker and uses the original #6 filters, not the far smaller #4. This is critical.#6 filters give you room to “work” the grounds as described above. The ability to saturate the grounds with small amount of water to extract the coffee and then add the remaining water is much, MUCH easier with a large cone. #6 cones are available online and in better-stocked stores. You do not have to make 10 cups of coffee to use #6 cones. When I make just one mug, I use a common #4 in the #6 cone.Early automatic makers used #6 cones but later switched to #4 to make smaller units. They also had to come up with various “sprinkler heads’ to saturate the grounds. Some even tried to pulse the water to fully extract the coffee from the grounds. Some models work OK, some don’t. And some change over time as minerals in the water clog the piping and pump and alter the dynamics of the whole system. This unit and a kettle (electric or stovetop) keeps things simple. This is not my first unit. I’ve had them on and off for years, tried pump units, went back to pour-over, etc. But in the long run, this is the most effective, least expensive and just plain good way to make great coffee. I’m sure you can find a $100 “Super Barista” pour-over with some elegant design execution and that is fine if you want it. But the basic physics of using a #6 cone are the same.

makes delicious coffee
I have been using my Melitta for years now and itâs hard to find coffee that tastes as good as it does when you brew it this way. Iâve broken the carafe a few times and had to order replacements, but this is still cost effective when comparing to other fancy brewers on the market that TRY to make coffee this good. Once you have your hot water ready to go, this brews the coffee swiftly so you donât have to wait too long for that first cup!

The best cup of coffee I have ever had.
In 1980, my new wife and I were about to embark on an extended honeymoon cruise aboard our new sailboat. We would sail from Rhode Island down to New York, up the Hudson River to the Erie canal. From there we would proceed through Lakes Erie, Huron and Michigan to our home port in Chicago. The trip would be leisurely and we would spend the better part of two years living aboard our boat.As we went about buying the multitude items to fully equip the boat, the thought hit me. We could only use an electric coffee maker when we were in port with access to 120v power. And I HATED instant coffee! One day as I was looking for galley supplies in a KMart – dishes, pots and pans, utensils and the like, I saw a Melitta on the shelf. As I read the instructions I thought that I might just have found the solution to my instant coffee dilemma. I tried it out at home and couldn’t believe how good the coffee was. I had spent 20 years in the restaurant business and had always used Bunn electric coffee makers. We even had one in our house. They made very good coffee but the Melitta beat the Bunn hands down.I bought a second one to use at home and shipped the other on to Rhode Island with the rest of the boat gear. We kept the boat for fifteen years and that doggone little coffee maker lasted the entire time. The day the new buyers came aboard to check out the boat, one of them asked about the different looking coffee pot on the stove. I offered to make them a cup of coffee and when they sat down to drink it, both the husband and the wife were amazed at how good it was. The wife asked, somewhat hesitantly, if it would be possible for them to buy the Melitta. I actually laughed before I explained that we had paid just twelve dollars for it fifteen years earlier and we would be delighted to include it with the boat. They were both thrilled with their new prize.Since 1980, we have only had Melittas in our home. We’ve gone through a few of them over the years, always as a result of careless handling, and they now cost only ten dollars more than the first one so replacement is not big deal. Keurigs are the king of the counter top nowadays but they’re expensive to purchase, expensive to use and those damn little cups are bad for the environment. No thanks. I’m a Melitta aficionado and will never change. Thank you Melitta Bentz for you marvelous invention.

This coffee maker in my opinion makes the tastiest home brew you can make. Itâs easy to use and your coffee runs through fast, I believe much faster than an electric drip machine. You can make how many cups you want in an instant. Great when we travel to whether staying in a hotel or camping, itâs fast, practical and convenient. I will never own an electric one. Love this simple yet practical unit!

Works great and as expected, and can’t beat the price. I have an induction stove so boiling water in my stove top kettle is fast. I use the melitta no 6 natural brown filters with it (found them for $2.50 for a package of 40!). Coffee comes out great. I already have a Nespresso but now that both me and hubby work from home, it is more economical to make a pot of coffee in the morning and use the Nespresso for single serving. I thought about getting a gooseneck kettle and Chemex set up but I wanted to try and easy fuss free pour over first and am glad I did! It’s so easy and fast to use and clean and makes great tasting coffee. If I have any leftover coffee I pour it into an insulated mug/thermos to keep it hot.

It’s durable, easy to clean, cost effective, and brews delicious coffee. Didn’t want to spend money on a Chemex right now, this works perfect in the meantime. filters are pretty cost effective too. Very happy with this. Skip the french press, opt for this instead!
